Despite some financial support and scholarships for tuition at Grinnell, Hisaji Sakai left after his first year and transferred to University of Michigan.

Soon after moving to his new school, he was drafted into the military.

Though he expressed gratitude for the generosity and support of the college community, Hisaji Sakai recalled feeling "almost but not quite" part of the Grinnell family.
